Baby Grunting While Eating Solids (2 Reasons Why + What To Do)

Babies make a variety of sounds as they grow from newborn to toddler, and there are always reasons why babies make sounds no mater how random the sounds are.

This article looks into why your baby may be making grunting sounds while eating

Baby grunting while eating solids:

We’re used to the regular cooing, laughing, and crying sounds that babies make, in fact, these sounds are like music to your ears, apart from the crying sounds

But one sound that babies make, that doesn’t sound like music to your ears, is grunting while eating solids

Here is why this may be happening with your baby:

Digestion:

It’s fitting that the grunting sounds that you hear from your baby are made when the baby eats solid foods because the grunting sounds are linked to digestion.

Your baby is new, and its new stomach needs to get used to ingesting different foods as they are introduced. In this case, your baby may need to get used to eating solid food after being fed liquids like formula or milk.

In the early stages of eating solid foods, the baby’s stomach will collect gas, and all this gas creates pressure in the baby’s stomach. This feeling is quite uncomfortable for the baby and the result may be that the baby grunts because of it.

In addition, because the baby does not yet know how to pass a bowel movement they will grunt until they have figured it out. Once the baby learns how to relax their pelvic floor, and use their abdominal muscles to get the stool down the digestive tract, then the grunting will stop.

Learning how to do this may take the baby a few weeks or months.

What to do:

Some grunting, coming from your baby, is perfectly normal and isn’t something to worry about. As long as your baby acts normally overall then the child will be fine.

If however, the baby starts to develop a fever, if the baby grunts with each breath they take, or if the baby seems to be in distress in general then you may need to take your baby to the pediatrician. These are signs of a respiratory problem.

You may want to check with your pediatrician that the grunting coming from your baby is indeed normal.

Respiratory issues:

Another reason why your baby may be grunting may be that the baby is sick with respiratory issues

If this is the case then the baby will grunt with every breath, the baby will have a fever, the baby will have nasal flaring, a blue coloring on the skin or tongue, lethargy, will pause when breathing, and you’ll start to see signs of distress in the baby

Your baby may be suffering from any of these illnesses or other illnesses: heart failure, asthma, sepsis, meningitis, or pneumonia

What to do:

Taking your baby to the doctor, as soon as you think that they have a respiratory infection, is recommended.

You’d have to treat every breath as a medical emergency and get your baby to the doctor ASAP.
