Why Does My Child Refer To Himself In Third Person (3 Reasons Why + What To Do)

Your child learning how to speak is quite a fun experience to watch, it may also make you feel like a proud parent, but you may start to become a worried parent if your child starts referring to themselves in the third person.

This article looks into why your child may be doing this.

Why does my child refer to himself in the third person?

Your child learning good speech habits is a good thing, this is necessary for the child’s development. but if the child starts to develop odd speaking patterns then you may start to worry

Here is why your child may be referring to themselves in the third person:

They are getting the hang of speaking:

If your child has only started forming full sentences, then they may sometimes make the mistake of referring to themselves in the third person.

This behavior simply means that the correct use of “me/you” is a bit difficult for them to grasp right now.

What to do:

This is normal and isn’t something to worry about, your child will get used to speaking in the first person as they grow older and see you doing it

Showing ownership:

Your child may also do this as a way of showing ownership of things, in his case, you’ll notice your child referring to things as “mummy’s”, “daddy’s”, using the sibling’s names or, using their names when showing ownership.

What to do:

This is normal and isn’t something to worry about. Your child will learn when to use which pronouns or nouns in conversation the more they spend time with you and mimic how you speak.

Your child should grow out of this but if they don’t, and your child is getting older, then you may want to consider taking your child to a speech therapist.

If you notice other odd signs in your child, along with this behavior, then you may need to see a speech therapist

He is repeating what he hears:

If your child is speaking this way then they may simply be repeating how you talk to them and don’t know that they should be switching to different pronouns when speaking about themselves

What to do:

If your child is doing this then keep speaking to them in the correct way but encourage them to use the correct pronouns when they make a mistake when talking about themselves.

Your child will naturally learn how to speak normally, but you helping out won’t hurt

You can also ask them why they are referring to themselves in the third person to try to get to the bottom of it
